Kalinzu Forest Reserve is home to the world most sought after primates the Chimpanzees found near Queen Elizabeth National Park in the southwestern area of Uganda in the Bushenyi District. This is just 2 hours drive from Mbarara. The Kalinzu Forest Reserve encompasses 137 km2 while the Kitomi-Kasyoha Forest Reserve, adjacent to Kalinzu, encompasses an additional 399 km2. At an elevation of 1000-1500 m above sea level, its habitat is broadly classified as medium altitude moist evergreen forest. Mammalian inhabitants of this forest include chimpanzees, black and white colobus, L’hoest guenon, baboon, red-tailed monkey, both blue and red duiker, bushbuck, waterbuck, giant forest hog, buffalo and elephants. Chimpanzee trekking permits at Kalinzu Forest can be booked prior to arrival in the park.
