Kalinzu Forest Reserve is home to the world most sought after primates the Chimpanzees found near Queen Elizabeth National Park in the southwestern area of Uganda in the Bushenyi District. This is just 1 hours drive from Mbarara. The Kalinzu Forest Reserve encompasses 137 km2 while theKitomi-Kasyoha Forest Reserve, adjacent to Kalinzu, encompasses an additional 399 km2. At anelevation of 1000-1500 m above sea level, its habitat is broadly classified as medium altitude moist evergreen forest. Mammalian inhabitants of this forest include chimpanzees, black and white colobus, L’hoest guenon, baboon, red-tailed monkey, both blue and red duiker, bushbuck, waterbuck, giant forest hog, buffalo and elephants. Chimpanzee trekking permits at Kalinzu Forest can be booked prior to arrival in the park.
Lake Bunyonyi literally means “the place of many little birds” if translated into the Local dialect. Lake Bunyonyi is located in southwestern Uganda between between Kisoro and Kabale and also boarders Rwanda just 2 and half hours from Mbarara Town. The Lake is thought to be approximately 900 meters deep, which if true makes it the second deepest lake in Africa. The lake is said to be Bilharzia free and accessed for swimming by the guests. The lake comprises of 29 islands with terraced hills that create very amazing scenaries.
